Maslinovik Watchtower

2012, Stari Grad Plain, Hvar (Croatia) –

Stari Grad Plain on the Adriatic island of Hvar is a cultural landscape that has remained practically intact since it was first colonized by Ionian Greeks from Paros in the 4th century BC. Inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008, The original agricultural activity of this fertile plain, mainly centering on grapes and olives, has been maintained since Greek times to the present. The landscape features ancient stone walls and trims, or small stone shelters, and bears testimony to the ancient geometrical system of land division used by the ancient Greeks, the chora which has remained virtually intact over 24 centuries.

This project is a modern interpretation of one of the original surveillance watchtowers, designed and constructed using wood,steel and gabion walls. The main idea is to create a new tourist attraction center, where visitors can rest and watch the plain and establish visual communication with the two different ports of the ancient settlement due to its strategic situation.
